Techexchange started off as TechTrader around November 2013 when two business partners purchased a parcel of cellphones from a major cellular network provider expecting to find damaged or faulty phones that were to be used as spare parts in a cellphone repair business.
What they found were basically brand new phones in their original boxes with their accessories and some even had their plastic protectors still on. The only noticeable difference was that the boxes had been opened and the phones had been switched on or used very briefly. The phones ranged from Blackberries (yes they were still popular in 2013) to Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy’s. These were not phones that were used for display in stores but had been opened for a number of reasons and could not be resold at the networks stores.
Phones were processed through the repair business and thoroughly tested by expert technicians. Some only required software updates as they were slightly older models than their latest released new counter parts. Majority of phones were functioning perfectly as a brand new phone.
With a change in plans as only 10% of the phones would be suitable for spare parts and the rest could be resold as, well that was the problem as we didn’t know what to call all these phones. At the time there was no-one selling anything like these. You could find used and second hand phones at informal retailers or sketchy traders where there were no guarantees if the phone was stolen or would work 100%.
After much debate it was decided they would be classified as Demo, similair to a demo car but better.
An office in Sandton was converted to a walk in store so customers could view the phones before buying. Ecommerce was still growing in South African and Kalahari and Bidorbuy were partnered with to sell through a reputable channel and market the As Good As New Demo smartphones. Customers suddenly started arriving at our office thinking it was a scam but were shocked by our low prices and the quality of the phones which were even sold with a warranty and guarantee.
By offering customers the ability to trade in their old phones and save even more money. The name TechTrader was registered and a website designed with the idea of selling throughout South Africa to offer Demo phones nationwide. With savings as high as 50% off when buying a Demo phone over a brand new cellphone or pay the phone off over a 2 year period and tied into a contract which was the norm back then. It really did seem too good to be true and TechTrader took off past all expectations.
A new partnership was created and TechTrader was rebranded to Techexchange with unlimited supply from retailers, networks and manufacturers open box phones now reputably known as Demo helped us become South Africa’s trusted supplier of premium pre-owned phones.
